The weightlifter, 38-year-old Gagik Gasparian, was in an accident that paralyzed him from the waist down. Gasparian is favored to win the Gold in the Paralympic powerlifting competition. He has been training in the United States for two years and has won several events against able-bodied competitors. |
The five Paralympians and their coaches will be in Los Angeles from August 8-11. They'll meet with the community and press, and then travel to Atlanta for their Olympic competitions. They plan to return to Los Angeles for a victory celebration from August 28-30. Details on events for the Olympians are forthcoming.
Armenia's Paralympic team is depending entirely on the Armenian community's support to finance its trip to Los Angeles and Atlanta. To date, Pyunic has raised nearly half the needed funds from individual donors and organizations. During the July 4 weekend, Homenetmen provided Pyunic with a fundraising booth at its 21st Annual Navasartian Games. Hundreds of festival-goers showed moral and monetary support. Another donor, George Agazarian, president of Alpha Sportswear, is providing the uniforms and other clothing needs for the athletes.
Pyunic is encouraged by the community's show of support and is working to raise the remaining $20,000 during the next two weeks. For more information on the Paralympics or Pyunic, call 800-696-8171. Tax deductible contributions can be made payable c/o Armenian Health Alliance and sent to
