The Educational System
The University offers two types of degrees. The Diploma of Higher Education represents the first level of higher education and is awarded by the University to students who successfully complete the five-year course studies in their field. The Candidate of Sciences Degree is awarded by the University to graduate students who successfully complete a three-year course study and defend a dissertation in their field.
Programs of study for the Diploma differ according to specialization. The University offers programs in 28 fields with 77 specializations in the natural sciences and humanities, in traditional and contemporary studies.
The curriculum comprises required and elective, general and specialized, and theoretical and applied courses. during the first two years of the five-year course of study students in the same field take general courses together and receive a basic education. they are then divided according to their specialization and receive specialized instruction.
Course work at the university consists of lectures, laboratory work, applied studies, seminars, internships, term papers, a thesis and tutorials. Internships are arranged both within the Republic and abroad.
The academic year comprises two semester, each approximately 17-18 weeks and each ending in an exam period. Classes are held according to a schedule formed at the beginning of each semester. Students are promoted from one grade to another at the end of the academic year. The grading system consists of four marks: excellent, good, satisfactory, unsatisfactory.
A state examinations committee certifies graduates who have defended their theses and passed their state examinations as specialists in their fields. There is an additional notation of their narrow specializations. In addition to certification as specialists in their field, graduates are also certified as teachers.
Candidate of Sciences degree programs consist of post-graduate work, are available in the most important specializations, and result in a Candidate of Sciences Degree following the defense of dissertation.
